Discipline Is a Responsibility to Yourself
I recently understood something about discipline that made me look at it a little differently. We often think discipline is about working hard, staying consistent, and pushing ourselves even when we don’t feel like it. But I think the harder part is accepting that, most of the time, nobody is going to force you to keep going.
If you quit, life will still move on. People will continue with their own lives. Nobody may even know that you gave up on something that once meant a lot to you. And that is what makes discipline so personal. You are not showing up every day because someone is watching you. You are showing up because you are the person who will eventually have to live with the result of your choices.
There will always be days when you don’t feel motivated, when progress feels slow, or when quitting seems much easier. I think discipline is not about never feeling like quitting. It is about deciding that a difficult day should not decide the direction of your life.
One day, we will all look back and ask ourselves a simple question: Did I become the person I knew I could become?
I don’t want my answer to be, “I could have, but I kept quitting.” I would rather know that I kept showing up, even when nobody was watching and even when it was difficult.
